Anesthesiology Residency Program

The Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine - Scott & White Residency in Anesthesiology is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) 

The program consists of four years of training as recommended by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA), with provisions for the "Clinical Base" 12 months and "Clinical Anesthesia" for 36 months. Our residency program currently is eight residents per year.

Typical Rotation Schedules

Clinical Base Year - Pediatrics, Pulmonary Medicine, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Medicine Wards, Emergency Medicine, Trauma Surgery, Medical ICU, Surgical ICU, Palliative Medicine, Anesthesiology, Radiology (two weeks), Medical Preoperative Surgical Evaluation (two weeks)

Clinical Anesthesia I-General OR Anesthesiology, Obstetric Anesthesiology, Pediatric Anesthesiology, Neurosurgical Anesthesiology, Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, Acute Pain Management/Regional Anesthesia, Veteran’s Administration Hospital, Surgical ICU, Outpatient Regional Anesthesia, Anesthesia Assessment Unit (Preop clinic) - two weeks

Clinical Anesthesia II- Obstetric Anesthesiology, Ambulatory Anesthesiology, Pediatric Anesthesiology, Neurosurgical Anesthesiology, Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, Acute Pain Management/Regional Anesthesia/Airway Management, Outpatient Regional Anesthesia, Veteran’s Administration Hospital, Surgical ICU, Chronic Pain Medicine Clinic (Interventional), Vascular Surgery Anesthesiology, Post Anesthesia Care Unit (two Weeks)

Clinical Anesthesia III-Chronic Pain Medicine Clinic (Interventional), Transesophageal Echocardiography, Outpatient Regional Anesthesia, Surgical ICU, Anesthesia Assessment Unit (two weeks), Ambulatory Anesthesiology, Advanced OR Anesthesiology and flexibility to emphasize subspecialties of interest including optional training at Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas

Training Program Strengths

  • A large case volume, as the unique nature of a large multispecialty clinic structure allows for efficient use of operating room time.
  • Expanding subspecialty experience in cardiac anesthesia with the development of heart and lung transplant programs.
  • The opening of the Children’s Hospital at Scott and White in the fall of 2011 will greatly enhance our resident’s experience in care of the pediatric patient.
  • A challenging patient population from a large referral area provides residents exposure to a broad range of clinical experiences.
  • An active pain-management program which provides excellent experience in the management of chronic pain and acute postoperative pain in adult and pediatric patients.
  • A strong track record of training competent anesthesia practitioners who have been extremely successful in completing Board Certification by the American Board of Anesthesiology (97% board certification rate over last 10 years).

  • A large Graduate Medical Education Program ( approximately 400 residents/fellows) with representation of almost all medical specialties provides optimal multidisciplinary educational environment for our residents.
