Department of Anesthesiology

The Department of Anesthesiology at Scott & White provides anesthesia services for pediatric through adult patients.  Our collaborative team format includes anesthesiologists, residents and certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) working side-by-side to deliver approximately 30,000 anesthetics annually in 24 operating rooms on the Temple campus, eight operating rooms in our ambulatory facility (The Pavilion) adjacent to the hospital and 21 additional operating rooms in our facilities in Waco (Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center), Killeen (Metroplex Hospital) and Round Rock (Scott & White - Round Rock).

Anesthesiologists provide dedicated specialized services in:

  • Pediatrics
  • Obstetrics
  • Neurosurgery
  • Cardiac
  • Critical care (surgical ICU)
  • Pain management (to address chronic lower back/joint pain, nerve pain, pain caused by injuries, pain following shingles and cancer pain)

The Department is under the direction of Tim Bittenbinder, MD, Department Chair.

The Pavilion - Outpatient Surgery Center and Pain Clinic

Outpatient Surgery

The Pavilion includes eight operating rooms that are fully staffed with eight nurse anesthetists and three anesthesiologists.  Our day surgery facility specializes in outpatient procedures, averaging between 900 and 1,000 anesthetics per month for orthopedic, plastic and reconstructive, otolaryngology, podiatric, general and eye surgeries.  Anesthesiology residents who rotate through Scott & White's Pavilion gain expertise in pediatric and ambulatory anesthesia.

Under the direction of Rick Roberson, MD, Pavilion Anesthesia Services utilize a multi-modal approach to provide post-op analgesia and prevent PONV, assuring rapid recovery and discharge. More than 98 percent of our patients are able to bypass the PACU due to these fast-track techniques.

Pain Clinic

Anesthesiologist Laurie W. Lazott, MD, uses a variety of treatments including differential neural blockade, sympathetic and steriod blocks, regional infiltration of the muscle, peripheral nerve blocks, pharmacologic therapy, epidurals and implantation of dorsal column stimulators and intrathecal morphine pumps.
